Dr. Robert Foley, 1923-2010
Dr. Robert J. Foley, 87, of Tyndall died Wednesday, July 28 at St. Michael’s Hospital Avera after a courageous battle with cancer.
The memorial Mass will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, August 3 at St. Leo Catholic Church, Tyndall. The Rev. Charles Cimpl of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Sioux Falls will officiate. Visitation will be held on Monday from 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., with the family present to greet visitors from 7:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., at the Goglin Funeral Home in Tyndall.
Emergency surgery that saved his life as a youngster motivated him to become a doctor — a difficult goal in those depression years. Born April 13, 1923 to Robert and Alma (Johnson) Foley of Blair, Nebraska, he graduated from Blair High School and attended Dana College there for a year. To help meet expenses when at Creighton University, each day after classes he worked a full 10-hour shift at Walgreens. Later, he became a manager at Harkett’s Burgers. Each job paid 15 cents an hour. Best at Harkett’s, the hourly wage included a bowl of soup and a burger. He was accepted into the wartime accelerated V-12 program at Miami University School of Medicine in Ohio. Upon completion, he received his medical degree from the University of Nebraska at the young age of 23. He interned at Mercy Hospital and Loyola University clinics in Chicago. He then spent three years in the naval service as a physician and medical officer, Lt. senior grade.
A blind date arranged by friends introduced him to Phyllis Gross of Huron, South Dakota, the girl he married December 27, 1950.
He served on the staff of the US Naval Hospital in Pensacola, Florida. Upon his discharge from the Navy, the couple arrived in Tyndall for what they thought would be a 6-month stay that lasted a lifetime. He established practice in a two-room office above the then post office and went to work. At times he was the sole physician in the county where he served as the family doctor, surgeon, orthopedist and delivered a recorded 1,600 babies including 5 sets of twins. Dr. Foley was the family physician to generations of families in and around the Tyndall area during his many years of practice. The couple raised their family of seven — six sons and one daughter — in this community — a town they loved.
Tyndall’s acceptance was immediate and soon resulted in the enlargement of the hospital. Dr. Foley established the Tyndall Clinic, which endures today as the Bon Homme Family Practice Clinic in St. Michael’s Hospital Avera.
Although he encouraged his family to be independent and make their own decisions in life, it was of great personal satisfaction that four children chose the field of medicine. His own passion for medicine was rivaled only by the love of family, farming and environmental conservation.
He was recognized for his 50-plus continuous years of practice by the South Dakota State Medical Association. During this time he served on the clinical faculty of the USD School of Medicine, on the SD Medical Association Legislative Commission and as a president of the Yankton District Medical Association. In Tyndall, he was a member of the school board and was instrumental in promoting the Tyndall Lanes, which has been given to the city. He helped initiate building the Tyndall swimming pool and served as a pool board member. He was a 50-year member of St. Leo Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and the American Legion.
He is survived by his wife Phyllis of Tyndall and their seven children: Bob, Albemarle, North Carolina; Don, Yankton, South Dakota; Steve, Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Jeff (Sara), Harrisburg, North Carolina; Scott (Ronda), Omaha, Nebraska; Elizabeth (James) Zorn, Phoenix, Arizona; Shawn (Janel), Philomath, Oregon; and eleven grandchildren. Four members of his birth family, three brothers and a sister, reside in Nebraska.
The many people whose lives were touched by Dr. Foley will remember him as a dedicated physician and friend. He will be missed.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make memorial contributions are asked to consider the Foley Family Medical Scholarship at the Sanford School of Medicine, USD, Vermillion, SD. This award is given annually to a student with an interest in rural medicine.

Palmer Foss was born January 27, 1923 in Freeman, SD to Inga (Jorstad) and Jarle Foss. In 1926 their family moved to the farm near the Jim River east of Scotland, SD where he made his home for 86 years. Palmer was raised in a Christian home, was baptized and confirmed his faith in Christ as his Savior as a young man. He was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, rural Menno and later years at Zion Lutheran Church in Scotland, SD.
He attended Oslo District’s one room school house for 8 years and then Menno High School where he graduated in 1941. In 1945 he entered the Navy and served in the South Pacific until discharged at the end of World War II in 1946. On May 4, 1948, he married Eirleen Johnson of Viborg, SD, which Palmer referred to often as the “best thing that ever happened to me”. Their love and dedication have been obvious to this day. Palmer claimed having two children (Karen and Jerry), as their biggest accomplishment and greatly enjoyed spending time with his 6 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. He always made it a point to tell them how blessed he was to have them and referred to them as precious cargo when instructing their parents to drive them home safely.
In November 2011 Palmer left the farm and moved into the Menno-Olivet Care Center where he resided until the time of his death, February 9, 2013.
Palmer is perhaps best known for his sense of humor and love of animals; traits which are recognized to have been passed on to his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Going to visit Palmer’s farm was much like visiting an exotic animal park, where he had his favorites… dogs, horses and miniature donkeys, but also had yak, buffalo, peacocks, coyotes, raccoons and just about any animal willing to hang around for a free meal. Similarly Palmer is recognized by those who knew him as a kind person who never chose to take advantage of anyone and often went the extra mile to make sure the other person was treated fairly.

Alice Ford, 1954-2016
Alice Ford died at her home in Tulsa, Oklahoma on January 6, 2016 at the age 61 after going through a number of recent medical problems.
Alice was born on April 5, 1954 in Scotland, South Dakota. She was the daughter of Charles and Doris Ford. She had three sisters, Doris, Shirley, and Susan. She was the youngest of the four girls and was adored and spoiled by her sisters as the "baby". She attended grade school in Kansas and graduated from Central High School in Tulsa. She continued her education at Tulsa University, graduating in 1976 with a degree in criminal justice. Alice worked at the Cross-Town Day Care Center in Tulsa and began work at Burkhart Office Supply Company on January 1, 1985, working as a faithful employee for 31 years until her death.
Alice enjoyed outdoor activities including fast pitch softball, camping and boating, spending much time with many good friends on her softball teams, playing the sport well into the 1990's. She had fond memories of her trips with the team to tournaments in the Tulsa area, Texas and elsewhere. She enjoyed working in her tree-shaded lawn on W 62nd Street and spent time in front of the chiminea on her patio. Making things from nothing was a passion. She constructed many things around her house and brought home pallets from work to make into small pieces of furniture for family and friends. She enjoyed a number of craft projects, often giving them to family and friends. She loved to read and share what she was reading with others. She was a devoted daughter, checking in on her mother several times a week after her father died, making sure she had what she needed and finding ways to make life easier for her as she got older. She made trips to visit with her sisters, being present for weddings and enjoying her 7 nieces and nephews and later 11 great nieces and nephews. She made a point to attend an annual Christmas week sister get-together in recent years meeting her sisters in Kansas City or Wichita or here in Tulsa every year until her health prevented the outing this year. Susan, Shirley and "adopted" sister Cyndi spent fun times together for movie marathons, casino trips and just hanging around playing cards and word games.
Alice was a member of John Knox Presbyterian Church. Until the last year, she was an active member of the book club there and women's circle. She played in the bell choir many years, enjoying the big bells and helping others learn to play. She had a ready, beautiful smile and quick sense of humor that endeared her to all who knew her.
Alice is survived by three sisters, Doris K. Ford (Jack Carter) of Los Alamos, New Mexico, Shirley Symns of Atchison, Kansas and Susan Howey (David) of Wichita, Kansas; nieces Debbie Comber, and Kellie Harvey and nephews Doug McKown, Brad McKown, Matthew Symns, Jay Howey and Ryan Howey and 11 great nieces and nephews and the many friends she made everywhere she went. She is preceded in death by her parents, The Reverend Charles Ford (1996) and Doris B Ford (2006).
Alice was cremated. Her memorial service will be held Monday, January 11, 2016 at 11 AM at the John Knox Presbyterian Church, 2929 E 31st Street, Tulsa, Oklahoma. A reception will follow for the family and friends to greet each other and share their memories of Alice. Her ashes will be placed in the John Knox Memorial Gardens at a later date. Moore Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Please call John Knox Church or the funeral home for more information.
Memorial gifts are suggested to John Knox Church or to the family for Alice's medical expenses. The family wishes to thank all those friends who have expressed their love for Alice and what she meant in their lives, Rev. London and Rev. Best and the Moore Funeral Home for their kind support.

After discharge from the Army Air Corps in 1946, he returned to the family farm and later resumed work as an aircraft mechanic on both fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft, with the South Dakota Air National Guard. He retired from the SDANG in 1983. For many years, Bill continued to work as a maintenance inspector/examiner for private aircraft throughout the area.

In 1952, he bought his first airplane, a Piper J3 Cub, for $275; explaining that, “it was cheap and he thought he needed an airplane.” His children remember Dad often asking them if they wanted to go chase clouds, take trips, or ride to school in the airplane. Many young people in the area were inspired to become pilots themselves after flying or talking aviation with Bill.
Thankful for so many years of wonderful memories are his children: Lolita Oorlog, Waterville, MN; Lois Sandvick, Missoula, MT; Cheri Worley and husband Floyd, Anchor Point, AK; Rick Ferwerda and wife Cheryl, Tyndall, SD; Bill Ferwerda and wife Diane, Blooming Prairie, MN; Terry Ferwerda and wife Alice, Salt Lake City, UT.
